One of the most common mistakes future expats make is choosing a location before understanding their own lifestyle needs.
When people begin researching Panama, they often focus on places.
Coronado.
Boquete.
Pedasí.
Panama City.
Bocas del Toro.
Each region has its advocates, and it's easy to become convinced that one location is the perfect fit.
But after more than 20 years living in Panama, I've learned that the best location is rarely the one everyone else recommends.
It's the one that fits your daily life.
Before choosing a region, consider the life you want to live.
Do you enjoy being surrounded by people, restaurants, and activities, or do you prefer quiet mornings and open spaces?
Do you thrive in warm coastal climates, or do you prefer cooler mountain temperatures?
How important is access to healthcare, shopping, airports, or cultural activities?
Would you enjoy living in a large expat community, or would you prefer a more local experience?
These questions often matter far more than the location itself.
The truth is that Panama offers many different lifestyles within a relatively small country.
What feels like paradise for one person may feel limiting to someone else.
The goal is not to find the "best" place.
The goal is to find the place that best supports the life you want to create.
Before making a decision, spend time exploring different regions.
Stay longer than a few days.
Observe daily life.
Talk to residents.
Pay attention to how you feel in each environment.
The more clearly you understand your lifestyle preferences, the easier it becomes to identify the region that truly feels like home.
Because successful relocations rarely begin with choosing a place.
They begin with understanding yourself.
