Can You Really Work Remotely from Panama?

The Truth About Internet, Lifestyle and Working Online Before You Move

Every week, I receive messages from people asking the same question:

"Can I really work remotely from Panama?"

The short answer is yes.

The better answer is… it depends on where you choose to live and how you prepare.

After living in Panama for more than twenty years, raising my son here, and working with people from around the world, I've learned that remote work in Panama can be excellent—but only if you understand the reality beyond the travel brochures.

Internet Has Improved Dramatically

Many people still imagine Panama as a country with unreliable internet.

That may have been true years ago in some areas, but today many communities offer excellent fiber optic connections.

In Coronado, where I live, my son completed his entire education online. He's also a gamer, which means our internet has needed to support video calls, online classes, streaming and gaming—all at the same time.

Like anywhere in the world, occasional outages happen, usually during severe storms, but they have been rare in our experience.

Your Choice of Location Matters

One mistake I often see is people choosing a town because they fell in love with it during a vacation.

Beautiful beaches don't guarantee reliable internet.

Mountain towns don't all have the same infrastructure.

Some areas are ideal for remote work.

Others may be better suited for retirement or vacations.

This is why I always recommend exploring different regions before deciding where to settle.

Your Lifestyle Matters Even More

Working remotely isn't just about internet speed.

Ask yourself:

Do you need a quiet workspace?

Do you enjoy cafés or prefer working from home?

Do you need easy access to Panama City?

Are you looking for a beach lifestyle or mountain climate?

The answers will determine which region is right for you.

Don't Move Based on Assumptions

Every year I meet people who arrive convinced they know exactly where they want to live.

After spending a few weeks exploring Panama, many completely change their minds.

That's normal.

And it's much less expensive to discover that before signing a lease or buying property.

My Advice

If you're considering working remotely from Panama, don't plan your move based only on YouTube videos or social media.

Come.

Explore.

Work remotely for a few weeks.

Experience everyday life.

Then make your decision.

You'll have much more confidence—and you'll avoid costly mistakes.

Final Thoughts

Panama can be an excellent destination for remote workers.

The key isn't simply asking, "Does Panama have good internet?"

The better question is:

"Which part of Panama fits the life I want to build?"

That's the question I help people answer.
